Paper logbooks have tracked blood sugar for decades, and they still work. Apps promise trends, reminders, and one-tap meal entry — and mostly deliver, with tradeoffs of their own. The right answer isn't universal; it's whichever one you'll still be using in month six, because a consistent record in either format beats a superior tool that gets abandoned.

- Handing it over at an appointment is dead simple — clinicians have read paper logbooks their whole careers, and many clinics still hand out the booklets.
- Free forever, in the uncomplicated sense.
Where paper quietly fails
Paper's weaknesses show up later, and they compound. A notebook can't compute anything: spotting whether your evenings have drifted over two months means eyeballing pages of handwriting. There's exactly one copy — left at home on appointment day, ruined by a coffee spill, or simply lost, the record is gone. Context gets skipped because writing meals long-hand is tedious, so entries decay into bare numbers, which are the least useful kind. And nobody else can see it: a spouse or adult child helping with your care can't check in on a notebook from across town.

- Appointment prep: exporting or summarizing a date range beats transcribing handwriting the night before a visit.
The honest costs: apps require a smartphone and some comfort with one; advanced features often sit behind a subscription; you're trusting a company with health data, so the privacy policy is worth actually reading; and any app can change or shut down — exporting your data periodically is reasonable self-defense with any health app, ours included.
How to actually decide
- Be honest about the phone question. If entering things on a phone feels like a chore you'll dodge, paper is the right call — friction kills logs, and a kept paper log beats an avoided app.
- Ask what your record is for. If it's short-term ('log for two weeks before the appointment'), paper is plenty. If you're managing this for years and want to see patterns, computation starts mattering.
- Ask who needs to see it. If a family member helps with your care — especially from a distance — sharing is hard to replicate on paper.
- Whatever you pick, commit to one. The worst setup is a split record: some readings on paper, some in an app, some only in the meter. Nobody can read a pattern across three partial logs.
- Try before deciding permanently. Two weeks with a free app costs nothing; if entries aren't happening, go back to paper without guilt.
Tip Hybrid works for some households: the person checking writes on paper because that's their habit, and a family member enters it into an app weekly for the trends and the backup. Clunky, but it preserves both people's strengths.
